Child Abuse Prevention Council, Monterey Council

The Child Abuse Prevention Center is a state, national and international training, education, research, and resource center dedicated to strengthening children, families, and communities.

The Child Abuse Prevention Center, known as the CAP Center, has a 39-year history of preventing child abuse, neglect, and abandonment through four core strategies:

1. Education
2. Advocacy
3. Health
4. Safety

The CAP Center is home to five unique agencies. They are The Child Abuse Prevention Council of Sacramento, California Family Resource Association, Prevent Child Abuse California, Lift the Children, and the Child Abuse Prevention Center Political Action Committee. Although governed by a single board of directors, each organization takes a different but complementary approach to preventing child abuse.

Child abuse fuels crime and suicide, broken marriages and substance abuse. Adults who were abused as children suffer sharply increased risk of heart disease, cancer, injuries and chronic lung and liver disease. In addition to destroying lives, child abuse costs California taxpayers an estimated $17 billion a year. The cost of prevention is a fraction of that. The CAP Center is leading efforts to stop this preventable tragedy. What we’re doing is making a difference.

Last year the CAP Center’s accomplishments included:

• A 96% reduction in child abuse cases among the families served.
• 140,000 children served.
• 80,000 parents educated.
• 325,000 families received information on how to prevent injuries.
• Over 200,000 Californians received education and support to obtain health coverage for their families.
• 10,000 professionals trained.
• 2,500 volunteers recruited who provided almost 80,000 hours of service.
• 27,000 professional caregivers received information and support.
